Back ground of the Children:
The selected children; came from various slums of Bhubaneswar and different districts of Odisha; for the camp have varied backgrounds and lifestyles, viz. they were children who had run-away from their homes more than once, have been addicted to substances, have dropped their school education, are unwilling to obey parents, etc. The Camp module ensured moral value training and life skill training each day along with regular activities.
How the children were selected?
Understanding the harmful effects of street life on children, children, who have a history of repeated running away from home, are addicted to substances and display hard behavior, are selected for the purpose of attending the camp. Most of them had dropped their study after primary education. Even they are very week in reading and writing in vernacular language and arithmetic. These children are included in camp with their parents concern.
As the camp was conducted by Association for Voluntary Action (AVA) with their mutual partnership so some CCI children of AVA also participated in this camp for behavioral changes. SATHI did some activities in the camp for supporting them in behavior change and life skill building from its experience.
ACTIVITIES
The camp was conducted by three capable and skilled Staffs, who followed 16 days tight schedule and undertook various activities for the benefit of the children by AVA and in support of Sathi team. One of them functioned as the Camp Teacher while the other two assisted him during various activities. The various activities in camp included the shelter as well counseling activities. To assist in various life skill trainings and NFE classes many Resource Persons were mobilized from various walks of life and professions. The table below reflects the planned daily schedule that was followed during the Camp.

While the activities of daily living like getting up in the morning and taking care of their own sanitation was a major part of the activity schedule, these activities can also be related to discipline among these children. In a way, these activities were aimed at inculcating daily discipline activities among these children who had displayed hard behavior while staying at home or AVA CCI.
Breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner were aimed at inculcating the values of community living among them. Apart from a healthy food for a better physical health, the children in camp started sharing a great bond and developed friendships during these meals. Moreover, it was a time for bonding for the Camp team and the children during meals.
Yoga, Meditation & Physical Exercise
“Meditation is a way of making your mind quite. It is the way to entering into the quite, that’s already there”.
Having a good concentration and developing a healthy mind is an integral part of a child’s development. Aimed at the holistic well-being and development of the child, about half an hour in the morning was devoted to the yoga and meditation classes. These relaxation techniques helped in controlling the emotions that led to banger and hurt towards their family members or others.
Physical health is necessary to let a child bloom into a better citizen. The physical health and mental health of a child go hand in hand. Therefore, the children in the camp were motivated to take part in physical exercise regime. It was carried out under the supervision of the Camp team.
Non- formal education

The children were imparted non-formal education both, by the Camp team and various Resource persons. Arithmetic class, the identification of English alphabets, birds and animals, parts of body and general awareness classes were some of the topics that were covered under this. Special efforts were made to manage the classes where children from different backgrounds could be absorbed. At times examinations and tests were conducted and rewards distributed to improve participation and to promote their eagerness towards education.
Games
“Sports teach you character, it teaches you to play by the rule, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose- It teaches about leading life.”
After taking rest in the afternoon children in the camp were given chance to play games likes Football, cricket and volley ball. They played for half an hour. The children were allowed to play various indoor as well as outdoor games for entertainment. Along with leisure, the games incorporated friendliness among the children in the camp. Sometimes there were competition and prize distribution to promote their skills.
Evening Prayer
“Prayer does not change god, but it changes him who prays”
Every evening there was 30 minutes prayer class on the veranda Hanuman Temple. Through prayer children were given moral teachings. Their character shaped and moral consciences were developed through prayer. No religion specific recitation was encouraged during the prayer sessions.
Moral Story
“Every story has a moral and every moral is a hope for a better life”
Along with various programs, children were given one hour for their leisure. To make the stories more interesting and mind engaging pictorial representations were made and projector was used to play videos.
Children meeting
Children meeting had been an important part of the activities in the camp. The children meeting helped the children to talk about themselves and to give out their grievances in the camp setting. It was helping the children to assert themselves as a distinguished part of the camp, where they can talk about their needs and grievances. Apart from this, the children meetings helped the Camp team in the feedback process so as to make changes in the curriculum to suit the children’s needs.
Special life skill education by Expert Trainer.
SATHI invited 8 Resource Persons on various days. Among them there is one Psychologist, who had done counseling to the children. One Yoga teachers have also joined and conducted Yoga class for the children. 5 life skill trainers, who had taken special class and taught the students various skills through games and other activities. Among the resource persons Mr. JOY from London had taught Basic English to the children.
De-addiction Class
A special class on de-addiction was taken by Md. Imran Ali (a renowned social worker in the field) for the de-addiction of the children. There were some videos and documentary films on the bad impact of drugs abuse.
Computer class
In the modern era life without computer and internet technology is out of imagination. So the Camp team was involved in imparting basic lessons on use of computers.
Drawing classes and competition
To enhance the potentiality within the children the Camp team conducted drawing and painting sessions. And to motivate them further competition was also organized that was rewarded with some prizes.
Health check up
There was health checkup programme in the Delanga hospital, Puri to ensure a healthy living and for the children for which they were also provided medicine as per need.
Education through cultural activities
To find out the potentiality within the children there were cultural programmes in the evening. The children were made to dance, sing and do mono action. There was “Antakshyari” competition among them. The cultural programmes were most happiest and entertaining moment. Mrs. Jayanti Rout an expert and artist supervised it to teach dance and acting to the children.
Campus cleaning and environmental awareness
Good environment is not only need for good physical health but also for complete growth and development it’s a basic need. Human beings themselves can create a good healthy environment. Within the camp period Camp team organized campus cleaning programme inside AVA campus premises. The main objective behind this was to create environmental awareness within the children and to aware them about the need of good healthy environment. Another objective was to create a good hygienic environment for the camp.
Picnic and children outing
The children were given chance to visit Barunei hill the historical place of Khurda, and Jatani , Khurda twice. At Jatani there was of DAL and PET page memorial rehabilitation centre foundation stone led ceremony. There the children participated in drawing, music chair, lemon race, cricket and dance competition. Lunch provision was also made to ensure the outing as complete package of fun and feast.
JYOTI program
The JYOTI program was a value imparting program where a candle was kept in front of the children. Every day, certain value was imparted to the children during Jyoti program. Discussions regarding a better future without lies, obedience regarding elders and parents were done during this program. At the end of the program, the children pledged to adopt the discussed positive value in their life.
GOING BACK HOME
On 5th April the children were sent back to their respective families and homes escorted by volunteers reunited. Some children were received by their guardians had come to receive. All the parents/guardians were handed over their children with some piece of suggestion for effective parenting.
